Chose promise, chose due, voici la toute première interview d’artiste de Mon Tableau à Moi! et puisque l’artiste du jour est Australienne, ce post est écrit en Français et en Anglais (pour la version Anglaise, il vous suffit de descendre un peu plus bas sur la page...).

J’ai donc aujourd’hui le grand plaisir de vous présenter Anya Brock, une jeune artiste peintre Australienne à la palette de couleurs vibrante et pleine d’énergie. Un figuratif empreint de fantaisie qui rend sa peinture très joyeuse et tellement australienne (oui, je ne vous cache pas que c’est comme ça que je vois l’Australie...).

Anya Brock vient de l’univers de la mode. Elle lance sa propre marque pendant ses études de stylisme. Anan connait un succès fulgurant, en 7 ans une vingtaine de boutiques à travers le pays vendent ses vêtements. Mais après une expatriation à Londres pour parfaire ses connaissances stylistiques, Anya Brock réalise que ce qui la rend vraiment heureuse, c’est peindre.

En 2011, elle rentre à Perth pour se consacrer à la peinture, très vite elle propose des installations extérieures et commence à être exposée dans les galeries locales.

C’est peut être de son expérience de chef d’entreprise qu’Anya Brock a tiré son approche mercantile de la peinture. Elle le dit elle-même, si elle préfère l’abstrait, c’est le figuratif qui se vend le mieux. Ses portraits de femmes et d’animaux à l’encre noire explosent sur un fond de couleurs en kaléidoscope. Elle a tout simplement trouvé le moyen de faire du figuratif sur une base d’abstrait.

Si vous avez la chance d’être en Australie, vous pouvez admirer le travail d’Anya Brock à la Supergraph Art Fair de Melbourne les 14,15 et 16 Février 2014. Si vous êtes à Perth, vous pouvez vous rendre au «140», un centre qui rassemble art, mode et nourriture dans un même lieu. Sa vitrine, peinte par 12 artistes dont Anya Brock est visible jusqu’au 31 janvier prochain. Pour la petite histoire, Perth figure dans le top 10 de la liste des 52 endroits où aller en 2014 du New York Times, et la photo qui illustre Perth n’est autre que la vitrine du 140... Well done Anya Brock!

Vous avez été chef d’entreprise dans l’industrie de la mode, comment êtes-vous devenue peintre professionnelle?

Je suis arrivée à un point où j’ai réalisé que créer des vêtements ne répondait pas à mes envies créatives. En plus, j’étais gênée par la nécessité de rendre mes créations commercialement viables, cela cassait tout.

Comment décririez-vous votre travail?

vif, simple, expérimental.

Pouvez-vous nous décrire votre procédé créatif?

Cela dépend de ce que je peints. J’utilise pas mal de styles et de méthodes différentes pour me challenger autant que possible. Soit je crée une pièce d’un trait, soit je peints un fond abstrait d’abord et ensuite je rajoute un motif ou un graphisme noir. Pour certaines des filles que je fais, je dessine, je rajoute de l’eau et des collages et ensuite de la peinture etc... Elle sont faites au hasard, sans méthode ni procédé, c’est ça qui est important. Parfois, la méthodologie peut nous faire perdre la progression naturelle d’une pièce.

Votre peinture propose une palette de couleurs vibrante. Comment choisissez vous vos couleurs?

J’imagine que c’est instinctif. Il y a certains bleus, rouges et verts que j’utilise, mais la combinaison de couleur dépend de comment je me sens au moment où je peints.

Comment décririez-vous une journée typique?

Hmmmm C’est assez variable vraiment en fonction de la ville dans laquelle je travaille. La plupart du temps je me réveille et soit je vais courir, soit je vais directement au studio. Là, soit je fais de l’administratif, soit je me lance dans la peinture - ça dépend de comment je me sens. En général, je peints quand je me sens un peu surexcitée (avec l’aide de café), après dans l’après-midi quand je suis un peu plus relax je dessine ou je peints des figures géométriques - des choses un peu plus méditatives.

Où trouvez-vous l’inspiration?

Je vais voir d’autres artistes, j’écoute de la musique qui m’entraîne dans d’autres univers ou alors j’attends juste qu’une lubie ou un feeling me pousse dans de nouvelles directions.

Quels autres artistes nous recommanderiez-vous?

J’adore les expressionnistes abstraits des années 50; Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline et Clyfford Still. Egalement les peintres Australiens Karlee Rawkins, Miranda Skoczek et Brett Whiteley. Et j’aime la symétrie géométrique de Baker Overstreet. Et l’artiste Aborigène Sally Gabori. Et plus récemment j’ai beaucoup regardé le travail de Julie Verhoeven.

Avez-vous un conseil à donner aux jeunes artistes?

Ben, tout dépend de ce que vous attendez de votre travail. Je suis une artiste assez commerciale, donc ce que je fais est assez différent de quelqu’un qui fait des choses plus obscures. Je dirais que la chose la plus importante c’est probablement d’accepter qui vous êtes et ce que vous faites.

Avez-vous prévu d’exposer un jour à Paris?

Hmmm je n’y avais pas pensé mais maintenant que vous en parlez, peut-être! hahaha

I promised it in previous posts, so here we go this is the very first interview of an artist by Mon Tableau à Moi! And because today’s artist is Australian, I wrote this post both in French and English (ho and if you want to improve your French skills, the top of this page is the place to go....)

So today I have the great pleasure to introduce Anya Brock, a young Australian painter with a vibrant coulour palette, full of energy. Figurative tainted with fantasy, her painting is full of joy and sooo Australian (yep, that’s the way I see Australia...).

Anya Brock comes from the fashion industry, she launched her own brand while she was studying stylism. Anan was what we call a success: within 7 years the brand was stocked in about 20 shops throughout Australia. But after an expatriation to London in order to perfect her stylism skills, Anya Brock realizes that what makes her really happy is painting.

She heads back to Perth in 2011 to dedicate herself to her art, and very soon she paints murals in the city and starts her first exhibitions in local galleries.

Perhaps it is from her entrepreneurial background that she gets her commercial approach to painting, she actually says that she prefers abstact, but that figurative sells better. Her black ink portraits and animals explode on kaleidoscopic coulours layouts, she basically found a way to paint figurative on an abstract base.

If you are lucky enough to be in Australia, you can see Anya Brock’s beautiful work at Supergraph Art Fair in Melbourne on February 14, 15, 16th. If you are in Perth, then I’d suggest you go to the «140» building that gathers art, fashion and food in one place. The artworks of 12 artists including Anya Brock are painted on its window and visible until January 31st. Anecdotally, Perth made the top 10 of the New York Times list of 52 Places to go in 2014, and guess what, the photo that illustrates Perth is the 140 building window... Bien joué Any Brock!

You use to run your own business in the fashion industry. How did you become a professional painter?

I got to the point where I realised designing wasn't fulfilling my creative needs. Plus I felt plagued by the need to be commercially viable with my design which killed everything.

How would you describe your work?

Bright, simple, experimental.

Can you describe your painting process?

It really varies on what I'm painting. I employ quite a few different styles and methods to challenge me as much as possible. I'll either create a piece pretty much in one go or paint an abstract layer first then go over with a black graphic or pattern. Some of the girls I do are about drawing, adding water and collage then paint etc.. they're haphazard and have no set method or process which is the whole point. Sometimes set methods can derail the natural progression of a piece.

Your paintings show a vibrant colour palette. How do you choose your colours?

I guess just instinctually. I have certain blues and reds and greens that I use but the combination of colours depends on how I'm feeling when painting.

How would you describe a typical day?

Hmmm it's pretty varied really depending on what city I'm working in. Most of the time I wake up and either go for a run or just go straight to my studio. Then I either do admin or get stuck into painting- depends how I'm feeling. I usually paint when I'm feeling a bit manic (with the help of coffee) then in the arvo's when I'm a bit more relaxed I'll draw or paint geometrics- things that are a little more meditative.

Where do you get inspiration?

I look to other artists, listen to music that puts me in different worlds and just wait for whims and feelings to take me and push me in new directions.

Can you recommend fellow artists?

I love the abstract expressionists from the 50's; Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline and Clyfford Still. Also Australian painters Karlee Rawkins, Miranda Skoczek and Brett Whiteley. And I love Baker Overstreet's symmetrical geometric works. And Aboriginal artist Sally Gabori. And more recently I've been looking at a lot of Julie Verhoeven's work.

Do you have an advice for young artists?

Well it depends what you want from your practice. I'm a fairly commercial artist so what I practice is quite different from someone doing more obscure stuff. I'd say probably most importantly accept who you are and what you do.

Do you plan to exhibit in Paris one day?

Hmmm I hadn't thought about it but now that you mention it maybe! hahaha.
